This is a very loooong list of many many things I love to see in fics and things I just love in general. Feel free to take a look at some of these categories ;)

General likes I always include in sign-ups

canon verse || missing scenes || prequel/sequel of a canon scene

5 + 1 || case fics || character studies || domestic fics || epistolary|| fluff || friends to lovers || friendship fics || future fics (future of the respective show/book) || gen fics || getting together || humour || hurt/comfort (mostly physical hurt – preferably from injuries) || slowburn

happy endings || open endings || second and third person POV || unusual narrator || lots of descriptions of the surroundings and atmosphere || multiple timelines

DNWs

Just a quick repetition of my DNWs before the avalanche of all the likes begins.

  • Alzheimer’s, cancer and coronavirus related themes
  • death of any requested character (even if it's canon)
  • downright unhappy endings
  • E rated fics
  • excessive unnecessary violence (i.e. way over what is usual for a given show/book)
  • kidfic (i.e. canon or original child character. Mentioning them in one sentence is ok, otherwise I prefer kids to be away in kindergarten or school)
  • mentioning body parts typically involved in sexual activities, especially c**k (mentioning “butt” or “breasts” in non-sexual context is ok)
  • omegaverse and mpreg
  • pairings involving three or more characters at the same time (even in case I request A/B and A/C I really don't want A/B/C. Please pick only one relationship unless the prompts and/or freeforms suggest I am ok with one of the characters cheating or one couple [A/B] breaking up and establishing of another couple [A/C]. Even in these cases, though, no threesomes)
  • permanent brain damage
  • pregnancy and parenthood
  • royal/high school/historic/sci-fi AUs
  • sexual content (for / requests: I’m happy my fave characters are dating, I just don’t need to see everything; cuddling and kissing “on screen” is ok)
  • supernatural elements, magical realism, fairies, ghosts and anything connected to magic in real world canons, especially in casefics
(these are real world canons for a reason ;) I LOVE casefics where the reader can play along and where it’s possible to find out/guess the solution based on presented evidence, dialogues, common sense and knowledge of the real world without resorting to some magical happenings)

Formats and mediums

I’ve borrowed many freeform tags from FIAB and Unconventional fanworks. I’ve tried to group them together so that it would make some sense ;)

canon verse || missing scene || prequel || sequel || future fic || episode tag || post-canon || multiple timelines

happy endings || open endings

character study || relationship study || second and third person POV || outsider POV of relationship/character || unusual narrator

Crossover – Two characters played by the same actor are actually the same person (for my fandoms it applies to Kerri Russell (Elizabeth in The Americans and Kate in The Diplomat) and Chris O’Donnell (the vet in Grey’s Anatomy and G Callen in NCIS: LA) oh, and also David Suchet (Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot but also first-class villain Krivas in The Professionals).

Tropes

Some general vibes of the fics I enjoy the most.

  • Action/Adventure - I associate this mainly with SEAL Team. So that’s missions! Deployments! And also with Judge Dee Mysteries and The Professionals because their investigations can be really dramatic. Quick changes of pace, everything happening at once, characters having to think on their feet…
  • AU - Canon Divergence - I put this here for SEAL Team for a very specific reason. Because the series ended with episode 6x06. You can’t convince me otherwise. I’ve moved into my cozy AU where Clay, Stella and Brian are still together and happy.
  • Canon-style plot - I just love the series and books I request and I want moooore. And because I mainly request medical or detective shows I love all the case fics (be it detective or medical) just sprinkled with a bit of the characters’ relationships.
  • Character Development – character studies and seeing the development of the character thorough the fic is great. For example I could name Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy and House because they are just fascinating. The way they think…
  • Established Relationship - I’d like to get a sneak peek into the private life of my faves.
  • Fix-it fic – Even though we love our books or TV shows there’s always something to fix, isn’t it? Yup, for example I’m not that happy about Calzona’s break-up (in Grey’s Anatomy) and so many deaths there and about Clay’s death (SEAL Team).
These were such bad bad decisions by the TV writers. And there’s so much room to build a totally new reality in the fic.
Also House M.D.! I think it got a bit off the rails after season 5… the hospitalization, the whole Cuddy/House, break-up and the car “accident” – maybe we could do without them.
  • Fluff - All my faves are so busy with saving the patients and saving the world, have to always be alert and competent. And I’d love to see a bit of fluff in their lives. Who’ll bring them the fluff? And what is it? Visiting a cat-café or breakfast in bed?
  • Getting together - The majority of my requested pairs are not canon, so I’d love to know how they started dating, who was the matchmaker, how was the first kiss, whether their boss was happy about it…
  • Humour – I love the mix of humour and drama in fics, witty dialogues, shenanigans happening…
  • Hurt/comfort - I love hurt/comfort. There can never be enough h/c in a fanfic. I prefer physical h/c, and usually I prefer injuries over illnesses. I love hurt/comfort and everything that encompasses it i.e. adapting to new life, permanent injuries, physical therapy…
  • Mystery/Procedural - Case fics! Case fics! I’d love to follow the characters while they are investigating a crime or trying to diagnose a patient.
  • Slice of life - I’d love to get a sneak peek into the everyday life of my favourite characters.

Alternate universe and canon divergence

I list royal, historic, high school and sci-fi AUs among my DNWs but there are other AUs and canon divergence I do enjoy!

AUs:

Academia AU || Artists AU || Bake Off contestants AU || Ballet AU || Bookstore AU || Criminals AU || Murder Mystery AU || Spies and secret agents AU || University/College AU

Vibes, time periods:

Dark Academia || Victorian era || Paris and Vienna of the 19th and 20th century

Canon divergence, Fix-it

(I’m mainly thinking about Grey’s Anatomy [Calzona break-up] and SEAL Team [Clay…] feel free to use it for other fandoms as well)

  • Alternate Universe – Character lives but is still badly hurt
  • Canonical character death replaced with rescue and comfort
  • Fix-It – Canon breakup doesn't occur
  • Fix-it – Character survives canonical death / Canonical character death is averted
  • Fix-it – Last-minute rescue for character who died in canon before they die
  • Surviving canon death with nonetheless life-altering consequences and injuries

Other divergence:

Exploration of Aftermath of Canon Events || Pre-canon – what sort of adventures did the character(s) go on before canon?

Character meets their child self || Traumatic canon event that happened to Character A happens to Character B instead

Case fics

I love case fics. I love crime novels. I love case fics so so much. There’s nothing like trying to solve the (murder) mystery alongside your faves.

I love all aspects of case fics. Just a sneak peek into the case in a drabble on one hand or detailed description of the whole investigation in a 10k fic on the other hand; jumping right into the grande finale with the detective presenting the solution; interrogation of the suspect…

I also love undercover work, spies, missions (SEAL Team-like) and the planning of them etc.

And when my fave(s) get(s) injured during the investigation… oh, so yummy.

Here are some of the freeform tags I’ve collected:

A accused of crimes; only B believes they're innocent || First case together || Hurt/Comfort During A Case/Mission || Interrogation || Scene from a casefic || Solving a high-stakes case || Solving a murder / Murder mystery ||

Character becomes a spy || Character realizes they've been working for the wrong side; switches sides || Enemies to Lovers - Undercover as a Couple || Mission fic || Secret Identity || Undercover Mission || Undercover - A character used to action has an everyday job and hates it || Undercover - Hurt/Comfort While Undercover || Undercover character ends up actually becoming the person they're pretending to be || Undercover at a formal event

Asexual (or aroace) characters

I would love more ace or aroace representation in fics (be it an OC or the main character).

Sherlock Holmes and Spencer Reid come immediately to my mind, head canons for any character are welcome!!

Here are some ace flavours:

  • Allo partner reassuring ace partner that it's okay if they never have sex
  • Anything with/about ace flag colours (I love purple so much)
  • Aro and/or ace queerplatonic life partners
  • Asexual Relationship(s)
  • Asexual spectrum character comes out and is respected
  • Aspec person/couple/group become media darlings of ace rep
  • Character discovers asexuality while in relationship; partner still loves them
  • Character grows to embrace their sexual orientation
  • Creating pride merch
  • Dealing with feelings of isolation due to aspec orientation in an allo/amatonormative world
  • Relieved to learn that you're not broken; you're just a-spec
  • The relief of sex not being required
  • Using your romantic label as your sexuality instead of telling people you're ace

Hurt/Comfort

I love hurt/comfort. In the fanfiction world it truly is the trope I read the most often, think about it the most often, plot it the most often… Simply put I love it when my fave characters get hurt (and maybe also get comforted).

I always have the impression that canon doesn’t pay proper attention to the characters’ injuries and they get better too quickly – though fortunately, fanfiction usually quickly remedies these situations and our faves suffer a bit longer ;) Just don’t kill them in the process, please, that’s my only condition. Otherwise, yes please, I beg you, hurt my faves ;)

I prefer physical injuries and generally speaking I prefer injuries over illnesses. I’m ok with any detail of graphic description from omitting it to very very detailed while reading about the injury.

I love when writers incorporate canon injuries into the fics (and pay them proper attention - unlike the TV writers!) or you can always imagine shiny yummy new ones ;) …limb injuries, fractures, amputation, spinal cord injuries, ribs, gunshot wounds…, the pain and recovery or adapting to new life. And now after the injury: How does the character’s everyday life look like? How are they coping with the hospital stay/PT/needing help/people staring/noisy colleagues? Do they have to use a cane / crutches / a wheelchair etc.? How will the injury/recovery/adapting influence the character’s friendships, relationships? How will the comfort look like?

Also for Hanahaki disease my DNW about supernatural elements doesn’t apply.

Thorough many exchanges I’ve collected MANY freeform tags connected to hurt/comfort. I’ve split them up a bit into these categories:

Sickfic

I know I’ve said I prefer injuries over illnesses but sometimes a good sickfic is all you need. Also, there are some fandoms where I don’t want my faves to suffer too much and inflicting common cold or flu on them is enough (Poirot, Miss Marple, Columbo etc.). I’ve divided the freeform tags into categories.
