Fandom 50 challenge - 1. The beginning

claire_czI've decided to join Fandom 50 challenge for 2024. The goal is to write 50 posts about things you are fannish about.
I hope I'll stick to it thorough the year (if I do, I'll sign-up later on the official post), I'm going to talk about my fave TV shows, fictional characters, my favourite books, there might be some meta or recs.
Today, I'd love to talk about my first contacts with online fandom and getting to know what it is. It was more than 15 years ago when I - like all my classmates - was watching House M.D. We were all chatting about the series frequently, especially while waiting for our P.E. teacher in front of the gym.
And I always wanted to know what happens next, and next. And soon, reading the blurbs in printed TV magazines wasn't enough. I was also aware that we were getting the episodes with a 1-year delay, as they were dubbed. And I couldn't stand the thought that in the US and other English speaking countries they were one whole year ahead of us!!! With the internet just installed in our household and with my veeery limited knowledge of English I typed "Dr. House" and then "House M.D." into the search bar and that was the beginning. I found so many articles in English speculating about the future plots. I found discussion forums with viewers chatting about the latest episodes and I found fanfiction net. And I never left :D
My English was very limited at that time, I often opted for reading fics in Polish instead (even though I don't speak a word Polish, but if you try hard enough and squint both of your eyes, it miiiiight be similiar to Czech). I also tried to read some fics in English. Gradually, I read more and more and was happy when I understood the gist. After a year I gathered the courage and left my first comment on ffnet! It was all just House M.D. fics.
There are some other firsts House M.D. brought me:
The most amazing thing is that since then they've created a universe, have written 38 House M.D. fics and now 15 years after writing the first fic they are writing House M.D. fic no. 39.

- I wrote some very shorts House M.D. fics in English but didn't publish them at that time.
- I slowly made sense of the fandom terms: R&R, OC, ship, concrit, lemon, AU, OOC (and let me tell you it's hard when you can't find it in a standard dictionary and don't know anyone in the fandom)
- I started reading a very long fic written by In the House, I believe it was their first fan fic.
